Here’s a shout-out to all lovers and supporters of Singapore cinema.

Last Shadow At First Light, the debut feature of Singaporean director Nicole Midori Woodford, will be opening officially on May 9, 2024, at The Projector.

A Singapore-Japanese co-production, Last Shadow At First Light is at its core, an exploration of memory, trauma, and intergenerational relationships. Informed by director Nicole Midori Woodford’s memories of her Japanese grandmother, the film follows teenager Ami as she traverses from Singapore to Japan in search of her mother.

Shifting into the spiritual and supernatural via hauntings and hallucinations experienced by the protagonist, this coming-of-age road trip lays bare universal themes of resilience in the face of fracturing loss and the enduring nature of human connections. Other than bagging several Asia Pacific Screen Award nominations in the categories of Best Screenplay and Best Performance, Last Shadow At First Light was selected in prestigious international film labs like Torino Film Lab, Talents Tokyo at Tokyo FILMeX and SEAFIC, as well as to compete at the New Directors section of the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2023.

4 Reasons to Watch This Compelling Tale

Why does the film demand your attention?

  • A Human-Interest Narrative that Resonates: Delving heavily into memories impacted by trauma, the film offers a unique and unflinching look at universal themes like mother-daughter bonds, loss & healing, self-discovery, survivor’s grief, and moving on.
  • Unforgettable Performances: Poignant performances by Masatoshi Nagase (Mystery Train, Cold Fever, The Hidden Blade), Mariko Tsutsui (Harmonium), Peter Yu (A Land Imagined), and Mihaya Shirata (nominated for Best Newcomer At Asian Film Awards).
  • Writer-Director Tour de Force: Nicole Midori Woodford (Young Artist Award 2020) is an alumna of Berlinale Talents & Asian Film Academy with prior short film showings at international film festivals like Busan International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Festival, and SGIFF.
  • Singapore-Japan Co-production: The movie is shot on-location in Rikuzentakata, one of the worst-hit cities after the 2011 tsunami and home to a theatre hall dedicated to Singapore in light of Singaporean aid donations in the aftermath.
