The stars and Chinese Zodiac forecasts didn’t predict it, but I have known since last year that 2024 is going to be a year of bigger expenditures.

I need a new phone. I (feel I) need a newer laptop. I most definitely need a new desktop workstation.

Oh, nothing happened; everything I’m using still works. 2024 just happens to be the year where most of my self-imposed hardware upgrade deadlines coincide.

The need is somewhat exacerbated, though, by all the recent focus on AI. To share, I’m still fiddling with generative AI but I’ve long started leveraging machine intelligence for all the nitty-gritty tasks in my photo and video enhancement works. Tasks like intelligence video noise reduction in videos, etc.

To be clear, my current desktop and GPU can still handle the heaviest of these tasks, that is, if I allow them hours. I’ve also, you know, long started noticing that the latest games tend not to run so easily on my desktop …

So yeah, I need a new desktop; one equipped with, hopefully, a kickass GPU. In current inflationary times, I definitely need something that will give me bang for my buck too! Amidst all my concerns, one GPU seems like a great buy: AMD’s Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE.

The “Golden Rabbit Edition” was originally released for the Chinese market in 2023, clearly to coincide with the Year of the Rabbit. Looking at what it has to offer, though, it seems a good idea to introduce availability for the global market.

Bluntly put, the Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE is a cutdown version of the top-end RX 7900 XT; correspondingly, with a more attractive price tag. It offers a taste of what a top-end card can do, with a few shavings here and there. In other words, an attractive choice for gamers and creators who want to, for the lack of a better phrase, have a try at what it’s like to have the best.

I’m certainly attracted, despite the price tag still being a small notch above what I usually pay for a GPU. Without further ado, the following is what led me to seriously consider the RX 7900 GRE as my next graphic card.

What Attracts Me: AI Acceleration and Top-Notch Gaming Performance

I’ll share what I’ve been told about the gaming aspects of the Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE, but before that, let me first highlight the AI capabilities.

The RX 7900 GRE utilizes AMD RDNA™ 3 architecture and is engineered with 80 of the same unified AMD RDNA™ 3 compute units featured in the flagship AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT units. This cutting-edge architecture does the expected magic of amazing color displays, accuracy, depth, etc., makes it easier to share high-quality gaming experiences too, but what really interests me is its design for AI acceleration.

According to AMD, RDNA™ 3 architecture for desktop-level “support Machine Learning workflows using multiple frameworks …” The generous 16GB of VRAM also helps with Large Language models.

The official literature further states that the 160 AI accelerators found on the RX 7900 GRE are optimised for FP16 interference, and when paired with 16GB GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, delivers incredible AI performance as far as time is concerned.

This is tremendously exciting to read, isn’t it? And although AMD doesn’t directly address it, I’m sure RDNA™ 3 architecture will benefit the AI applications I used, which are mainly for photo and video enhancements. Anyhow, the entire AMD RX 7000 series features AI accelerators and so I bet even the lowest-end 7000 model will perform better with AI operations when compared to my current card.

Coming to the gaming aspects, the Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE promises:

  • 12 percent more FPS/$ on average at 1440p max settings compared to price-matched competition units. In other words, the bang for one’s buck that I’m looking for.
  • As mentioned, 16GB of VRAM enables incredible 1440p and 4K experiences for the games of today and tomorrow. (I won’t bet so much on the games of tomorrow, TBH, but I’m sure it would at least last 3-4 years)
  • AMD Fluid Motion Frames, a cutting-edge, frame generation feature that brings increased frame rates and smoother movement for game-winning performance across all DirectX® 11 and DirectX® 12 games for all Radeon™ RX 6000 and 7000 series graphics cards.
  • AMD HYPR-RX delivers the combined performance benefits of AFMF, Radeon™ Super Resolution, Radeon™ Anti-Lag, and Radeon™ Boost, delivering an ultimate gaming experience worthy of the 7000 series.
  • Further future-readiness with DP 2.1 support and AV1 encoding.

AMD’s Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE: Price and Availability in Singapore

The AMD Radeon™ RX 7900 GRE 16GB will be available worldwide on Feb 27, 2024, with a starting price of USD 549. This, I guess, will translate to a price of about SGD 740 in Singapore.

It’s a bit more than what I usually fork out for a GPU; I usually go for graphic cards at what I call the “runner-up” bracket. I.E., the second-best range like the 7800 series.

But as I mentioned above, the RX 7900 GRE 16GB gives a taste of the top 7900 cards but without the corresponding wallet impact. For me, this is attractive even though I might not actually need all that power. Or would I? Hardware upgrades should always prepare for the future, after all.

I’m willing to fork out that bit of an extra to see what it’s like to have the near-best. I’m eagerly waiting for my favourite desktop builder to include the “Golden Rabbit” in their options.

Addendum: AMD Radeon™ RX 7700 XT Price Drop

‘Right, I’ll just leave this here for readers who want to consider a wider array of options for their next GPU.

Good news. The AMD Radeon™ RX 7700 XT will enjoy a price reduction from Feb 26, 2024. It’s not a huge cut, just over USD 30/-, but it does still bring the price down to as low as USD 419.

As part of the RX 7000 series, the RX 7700 XT is also endowed with features like AMD Fluid Motion Frames Technology, AMD HYPR-RX Technology, and features for the future such as support for next-gen DisplayPort 2.1.

For your information and consideration, in case the RX 7900 GRE doesn’t excite you.
