Enjoy a gastronomic meal from the perspective of Spinal Muscular Atrophy patients with a 4-course dining experience at Atout that simulates the experiences of SMA individuals.

Together with MDAS, (Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore) and European restaurant Atout, multinational biotech company Roche brings its Rare & Share Dinner series to Singapore for the first time in their continued support for individuals living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare and devastating genetic muscular-wasting disease.

Scheduled for launch on the rarest day of the year—Feb 29, 2024—the trio will present a gastronomical 4-course menu devised by Chefs Azrin Rahman and Patrick Heuberger of Atout, a dining experience that thrills tastebuds while emulating real-life challenges faced by individuals with SMA throughout their daily lives.

As an awareness drive cum charity dinner, a portion of the proceeds will be channelled to MDAS to support SMA care programmes. Following Feb 29, the Rare & Share Dinner will continue to be available at Atout on Wednesdays across March 2024 at SGD 138++, with bookings available at https://atout.sg/rare-and-share/.

Do consider contributing to SMA awareness and, in the process, treating yourself to a superb dinner. To know more about the Rare & Share Concept by Roche, read on.

The Rare & Share Concept

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic condition characterised by the gradual weakening and wasting of muscles that impacts daily functions like walking, eating, and breathing. Some SMA individuals require round-the-clock care and support.

SMA most commonly affects infants although many older children and adults are also affected. Currently, there are approximately 40 to 50 SMA patients in Singapore. More than 80 percent of patients supported by MDAS are aged 16 years and older too. Worse, although effective treatments and supportive care are available in Singapore, they are often insufficiently covered by existing healthcare funding and subsidies.

The Rare & Share concept was pioneered by Roche in Thailand to raise awareness and funds in support of people living with SMA by zeroing in on food as one of the most significant and relatable aspects of daily life. Led by Chefs Patrick and Azrin, the Rare & Share Dinner incorporates elements that allow diners to experience firsthand the debilitating impacts of the condition, a profound experience conveyed through specially designed weighted spoons and specific preparation methods.

Judy Wee, Executive Director, MDAS, said. “Rare & Share is a unique opportunity to not only enjoy a memorable dining experience at Atout but also to gain a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by families impacted by SMA. Through this initiative, we hope to raise awareness, foster empathy, and garner support for those affected by this rare disease.”

Yeoh Ying Ying, General Manager, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Singapore, said. “At Roche, we are committed to advancing research and developing treatments that improve the lives of individuals with neurological and neuromuscular disorders. The Rare & Share initiative aligns with our mission, offering a tangible way for the community to engage with and support individuals with SMA.”

Although there is a growing awareness of SMA in Singapore, not many people really understand what it is to cope with difficulties in moving, eating and even going out, things we often take for granted. This is the daily reality for those living with SMA, from childhood all the way until they are adultsAssociate Professor Stacey Tay, Senior Consultant, Division of Paediatric Neurology, Department of Paediatrics, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute, National University Hospital.
