Golden Village x The Projector – A New Ultracool Cineplex for Movie Lovers

Singapore movie lovers rejoice! Golden Village x The Projector at Cineleisure opens on Dec 2 and is hands-down one of the country’s coolest cineplexes ever.

Back in June, many Singaporean movie lovers, yours sincerely included, were heartbroken over the closure of an Orchard Road icon.

After over 20 years in operation, Cathay Cineleisure shut its doors for good in late June. In my case, I was doubly heartbroken for the cineplex was my default go-to for new movies since 2003, and part of the reason why I decided to start a blog featuring movie reviews.

But even back then, it was not a complete tragedy for it was announced that a Golden Village x The Projector (GV x TP) collaboration would eventually take over the space in late 2023. Well, it’s now December and in the short span of five months, the entire fifth and sixth floors of Cineleisure have been refreshed, with the brand-new GV x TP opening its door to the public on Dec 2, 2023.

It’s the beginning of a new era for Singaporean movie-goers, with the new cineplex described by the management as a place where ”mainstream meets the alternative.” I had the pleasure of previewing the premises on Tuesday and let me just say it’s a case of the familiar blended with the awesome new.

The space still feels the same, but a striking, artsy identity now dominates the scene. True to the nature of the collaboration, this is now also the place not just for your standard Hollywood popcorn flicks but also introspective, audacious indie features, while homage is paid to classic cinemas and filmmaking.

I look forward to many exciting movie nights in this new complex.

Level 5 is now awash in striking colours, with distinctive movie-inspired décor elements too.

There’s a certain technicolor feel to the colour scheme too?

Fans of The Projector will immediately recognise the poster montage background at the box office.
Pop Art Ceiling Mural
I love this pop-art-inspired ceiling mural! Quite a bit of work to figure out references, though.
Seats in the viewing halls have been refurbished. They are now the faux leather type which is easier to clean and maintain.
Golden Village x The Projector Yangtze Hall
The halls managed by The Projector are named after famous (and notorious) defunct cinemas of Singapore. This is the entrance to “Yangtze,” the Pearl Centre icon previously described by some publications as Singapore’s leading soft-porn cinema …
Level 6, i.e. where the halls are, has substantially changed too. There are now lots of cozy seats and quirky, cool photo spots.

Ticketing Info

Some info on how the Golden Village x The Projector collaboration would operate, as far as ticketing is concerned.

Like before, there are still six halls on Level 6, with a combined total of over 1,400 seats. Three halls will be managed and ticketed by Golden Village while the other three will be managed and ticketed by The Projector.

The ticketing process will thus be separate, i.e., you buy from The Projector’s website for their shows and from Golden Village’s site for others. Alternatively, you could just head over to the box office or the self-service kiosks on Level 5 to do it.

To be honest, this ticketing process felt a little confusing to me at first but I soon reckoned that’s because I forgot that Golden Village and The Projector are ultimately separate cinema operators. The best way to understand it is to consider them as two operators sharing the same venue, with separate halls used by each.

New Event Spaces: Room 237 and Ruby Lounge

Refurbished halls and a swanky new decor theme aren’t the only new attractions at GV x TP. There are now also two stylish event spaces capable of hosting a combined total of 300 guests.

Tucked behind the bar on Level 5 is Room 237, an enclosed flexible event space with six digital screens that could be used for digital art presentations, and with space for up to 50 people. Named after that awful room in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, it’s a nod to The Redrum at The Projector’s Golden Mile Tower venue. Note too that despite its namesake, Room 237 is quite a cozy spot, with no sinister spectres, and is perfect for small gatherings.

Over at Level 6 is Ruby Lounge, a corner unit with high ceilings, The Projector’s signature movie posters decor, and city views that overlook the junction of Orchard Road and The Heeren. This stylish venue can accommodate up to 150 people and in my opinion, would be perfect for cocktail parties or pre-movie events.

For even larger corporate or public events, hosts can consider takeovers of the new No Spoilers Bar, which can accommodate up to 250 standing. All event spaces will furthermore benefit from catering service by the new full-service restaurant. More details below!

A New No Spoilers Bar

No Spoilers Bar, previously seen at The Projector’s pop-up “Projector X: Picturehouse” at The Cathay, reenters the SG dining scene at GV x TP.

No Spoilers Bar offers an elevated menu of well-loved cinema snacks from popcorn and nachos to gourmet hotdogs, grilled sandwiches, and pizza. Operated by The Projector, the full bar will include an eight-tap draft beer machine and will double up as a live music venue on Fridays and Saturdays from 10.30 pm till late. Patrons can also look forward to hot snack options such as Chilli Cheese Fries and Poutine Fries with 10-inch pizza selections ranging from the classic Margherita to a special Chicken and Pesto option.

Better yet, movie-goers and patrons will also have the option to dine in at No Spoilers Dining, a 44-seater restaurant serving contemporary Southeast Asian cuisine and helmed by Chef Girda “Dot” Bandi, who has led the kitchens of Timbre Music venues for 15 years. Guests can look forward to unique dishes such as Kacang Pool served with Sourdough Toast (fava beans puree cooked with spices and served with eggs, feta cheese, onion and green chillies) and Salted Egg Brussels Sprouts as their starters before moving on to mains such as Rendang Braised Beef Short Ribs and Perchik Cornish Hen served with haricot beans.

No Spoilers Bar operates from Sunday to Thursday from 11 am to 11 pm and opens from 11 am to 12 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, with No Spoilers Dining taking in their last kitchen orders at 9.30 pm.

GV x TP Housewarming Specials and Opening Events

You guessed it! The opening of the new GV x TP will be celebrated by a slew of housewarming specials.

Golden Village will be bringing anticipated titles such as Wonka and Napoleon to their halls. Golden Village will also be adjusting their ticketing prices for screenings in Cineleisure, with adult ticket prices starting at SGD 10.50 for Monday to Thursday and SGD 15 for weekend sessions. GV Movie Club members will moreover enjoy SGD 2 off ticket prices throughout the week.

As part of the opening, the first 200 movie ticket holders on Dec 2 will be treated to free popcorn with every ticket purchased too. From Dec 3 to 8, 2023, GV movie-goers will also be able to redeem a Free GV Movie Pass with every four or more GV tickets purchased.

From Dec 11 (Monday) to Dec 13, 2023 (Wednesday), and Dec 18 (Monday) to Dec 20 (Wednesday), GV will be offering SGD 3 movie screenings for selected titles. Guests can look forward to catching favourites such as Barbie, Blue Beetle, Disney And Pixar’s Elemental, Gran Turismo: Based On A True Story, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, and No More Bets in their halls.

As for The Projector, their halls will begin with Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and The Heron and Cannes Palme d’Or Winner Anatomy of A Fall, as well as the 2023 Winner of Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard How To Have Sex.

The Projector will be programming a wide range of opening live events too, including bringing the iconic Kampong Boogie to No Spoilers Bar on Dec 1, a Yoga Bloc Party in the morning on Dec 2 at Ruby Lounge before the EATMEPOPTART Party takes over the space in the evening.

The Projector will also organise a fundraiser for the Cat Welfare Society with a screening of Kedi and a craft market on Dec 16.

Lastly, fans of The Projector can look forward to curated screenings. From Christmas classics Tokyo Godfather and Edward Scissorhands to celebrating the 15th anniversary of Twilight, programming at GV x TP will carry the same sense of whimsy and tongue-in-cheek humour that The Projector is known and loved for.
