Orchid Extravaganza 2023 | Gardens by the Bay (Video)

Orchid Extravaganza is happening at Gardens by the Bay, Flower Dome, from now till Sep 17, 2023.

Orchid Extravaganza: Orchids of the East Tropics is, let’s see, the fifth floral show at Gardens by the Bay for 2023. I was somewhat surprised when I read about it.

Surprised as in, huh? An orchid exhibition at the Flower Dome? Why? Isn’t there already an orchid showcase at the Cloud Forest Dome? If tourists want to enjoy the orchids of Singapore, why not just head over to the National Orchid Garden instead?

But like many Flower Dome exhibitions, Orchid Extravaganza turns out to be much, much more than just orchids. On showcase are also the traditional architecture of Southeast Asia as well as elegant Kebaya blouses. The latter is because Singapore is one of several ASEAN countries that have nominated the Kebaya for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

It’s lovely and atmospheric; strolling through the main display area is like walking through a dreamy Southeast Asian village. With the 58th National Day also happening this month, and how our national flower is an orchid, I guess the exhibition could also be considered a mini celebration of Singapore heritage.

I strongly recommend a visit. Esp on National Day week.

Orchid Extravaganza 2023 begins with a Lath House, a gardening structure that provides support and shade. Orchids are shade-loving flowers.

One of several Kebaya displays. These culturally significant traditional blouses are exquisite and sophisticated, aren’t they?
Ruean Thai Display at Gardens by the Bay
This is a Ruean Thai, a traditional Thai house. Before it is a selection of traditional Thai handicrafts.
Southeast Asian Kebaya
More gorgeous Kebaya displays. These are near enough to the strolling path for visitors to be able to appreciate the amazing embroidery.
Rumah Pahang Miniature at Gardens by the Bay
A lush creek behind a miniature Rumah Pahang. Adorned by lots of moth orchids too.
Rumah Tungkup | Brunei Traditional House
A Rumah Tungkup and more Kebaya displays. The Rumah Tungkup is a style of traditional house found in Kampong Ayer of Brunei.

All traditional houses at Orchid Extravaganza are accompanied by the national flowers of the countries the houses are from. Keep an eye out for these blooms when visiting!

Do orchids immediately invokes images of the exotic orient?
Pink Moth Orchids
Such perfect form and hues.
Orchids often resemble dancing butterflies too, yeah?
Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim Agnes | Singapore National Flower
Last but not least, the Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim Agnes, Singapore’s national flower. How about getting up close and personal with this SG symbol on National Day?

Orchid Extravaganza 2023 ends on Sep 17, 2023. Admission fees to the Flower Dome apply. The dome is open from 9 am to 9 pm, with last entry at 8.30 pm.

Check out my pictures from the 14th Asia Pacific Orchid Conference too, another gorgeous orchid event that took place in Singapore in August 2023.
