2023 Yamaha Electone Arrangement 1: 香港新年歌組曲 (Hong Kong Lunar New Year Songs Medley)

Free Electone sheet music and registrations for 香港新年歌組曲 (Hong Kong Lunar New Year Songs Medley). May the new Rabbit Year be splendid for everyone!

Back in 2020, when I started arranging classic Lunar New Year songs for the Electone ELS-02C, I made quite the rant about … noisy Chinese festive music. You know, the ones with the gongs and cymbals and all, and singers screaming about money and windfalls every other verse.

I made it clear that I dislike such music styles, and so for three consecutive years, I arranged classic Lunar New Year songs with a more Western flavour. So far, I’ve done one in Big Band/Broadway style, a medley in classic Pop Symphony style, and one in Organ Bossa last year.

This year, I thought about doing … … … … Yup, I spent the first two weeks of January 2023 staring at my Electone and YouTube, and I just couldn’t think of or find any classic CNY song that would benefit from a radically different treatment. Not unless I redo some of the songs in my 2021 medley.

I’m completely dry, as the saying goes. Worse, this year’s Xin Nian is really early. I’m out of ideas and short of time.

… …

In the end, I decided to swallow my pride and earlier rant, and settle for a quick solution. I pieced together three classic Hong Kong Lunar New Year songs into a festive medley. I’m mostly relying on auto accompaniments too as I just don’t have the time to experiment.

Within the medley, there are also lots of gongs and cymbals. Yes, I’m completely taking back my earlier rant.

Oh, one last thing. This medley arrangement isn’t original—I based it on one of those Cantonese pop festive medleys available on YouTube. If you’re a fan of those, you’d probably know right away where I got my inspiration from.

Arrangement Notes

  1. The three festive songs are 歡樂年年 (Foon Lok Nin Nin), 新春頌獻 (San Ceon Zung Hin), and 祝福你 (Zook Fok Nei). The names mean “Happiness Every Year,” “Praise of the New Spring,” and “Bless You,” respectively.
  2. Foon Lok Nin Nin was sung by Adam Cheng and Lisa Wang in the 70s, with the tune  based on an older Chinese New Year festive song. San Ceon Zung Hin was also sung by Adam Cheng in the 70s; in the same album as Foon Lok Nin Nin, I think. Zook Fok Nei is a composition by the legendary Joseph Koo/James Wong duo. Koo just passed away a fortnight ago, by the way.
  3. I heavily depended on the Dancefloor preset rhythm. In fact, my introduction is entirely lifted from Intro 2 of this preset. I did vary some drum beats and accompaniments, though.
  4. At suitable choruses, I added Chinese drums and gongs, and cymbals from the Chinese Trad 1 and Chinese Trad 2 presets. (Grr!)
  5. My leads this time round are Trumpet 10 and Di Zi. They aren’t textured enough on their own, so I partnered them with a Brass sound and a Woodwind sound, respectively. For the first verses, i.e., those for Foon Lok Nin Nin, I had some fun with wider panning too. To create the impression of two (Cantopop) singers singing to your left and right.
  6. Other than some chord fillers and a one-bar run, there’s nothing difficult about this Lunar New Year festive medley arrangement. I’d grade it a Grade 7, at worse.
  7. I started work on this last Saturday and had everything recorded and finalised today. In other words, it’s a really rushed piece of work! As such, there are various ideas that I didn’t incorporate. For example, Bar 28 would benefit from a gliss and a higher octave, played with a Rock Organ sound. The various chord fillers could be more complex. (Far more complex) The drums for the third song should have some gongs, chimes, and bells added in. If you’re downloading my score, please feel free to experiment!

Happy Year of the Rabbit 2023, everyone. GONG HEI FAT CHOI!
