Shure SE846 Gen 2 and Special Edition SE215 Purple Launch

Christmas and the festive year-end are around the corner. If you’re looking for outstanding audio gear to pamper yourself with or to give to a loved one, here are two superb new releases by Shure to consider.

Shure SE846 Gen 2
Other than superb audio clarity, soundstage, and imaging, the Shure SE846 Generation 2 allows for incredible personalisation. You can tailor the sound signature to your liking.

Shure SE846 Generation 2 Sound Isolating™ Earphones

The Shure SE846 has long occupied a legendary position in the world of music, beginning with how it remains popular and highly regarded ten years after its release. With the Shure SE846 Generation 2, the American manufacturer retains all that’s great about the classic model, while also adding two new metallic colours (Jade and Graphite), an extra selectable sound signature, an expanded sleeve selection, and an updated packaging.

Ever encountered that sort of regretful situation in which a pair of earphones sound fine overall but is just a shade too warm in signature, or too enthusiastic with the highs? Well, the original Shure SE846 resolves this by providing three “nozzles” for you to change the sound signature with. Generation 2 retains the original three nozzles of Balanced, Warm, and Bright, while adding a fourth Extended nozzle.

This new nozzle delivers two impressive magic. It improves high-frequency extension. It also features a more targeted contour in the 4kHz – 12kHz frequency response range, the result of which is even more superior imaging clarity and the addition of what Shure calls an “airy” quality to playback.

Other features include:

  • The original universal sound isolating design and four precision-engineered drivers of the first generation. Designed to deliver high-end audio clarity.
  • A ground-breaking low-pass filter design that delivers the true performance of a subwoofer. One that doesn’t accomplish the effect by sacrificing detail.
  • Sound isolation that blocks up to 37 dB of distracting noise. Note, the published value is higher than the general noise cancellation standards of 32 dB.
  • An ergonomic design to ensure long-wearing comfort, with cables out of the way.
  • Detachable 3.5 mm cable. The cable can be replaced by Shure’s True Wireless Secure Fit Adapter (sold separately).
  • A variety of sleeves to help you achieve the perfect fit. Includes a set of Comply™foam sleeves at XS, S, M, and L sizes.
  • Clear calls and controls with integrated remote + mic, and seamless controls.
  • As mentioned above, the options of Clear, Jade, or Graphite casing. The underside of the SE846 Gen 2 remains clear like its predecessor.
  • Two years warranty and a carrying case.

An “Extended” Listening Experience

I had the pleasure of trying out the new SE846 Gen 2 with the (default) Extended nozzle fit, and in non-technical terms, I’ll highlight the following:

  • If you’re unfamiliar with the fitting method, it takes a while to figure out how to wear the earphones. But once in position, it does its sound isolating magic right away. As great as any noise cancellation function.
  • That subwoofer sensation … It doesn’t thump in your ears but you do sense it right away. It subtly but confidently adds life to every beat.
  • What’s most impressive about the listening experience is the ambience, which is my description for what Shure terms as airy quality playback. The soundstage and imaging are expectedly superb, but beyond this, there is also a certain spatial naturalism; it’s as if I was listening to a performance in person. Note too that “airy” here doesn’t mean the sound gets hollower, it’s a sensation more than an effect. If anything, the nuances, traits, and resonance of instruments became more pronounced too.
Shure SE846 Gen 2 True Wireless Mode
I tried the SE846 Gen 2 in true wireless mode, and the sound quality blew me away. Can you imagine how great it would be in wired mode?

The SE846 Gen 2 Sound Isolating Earphones are available online at Shure Shop, Lazada, Shopee, and authorized resellers for S$1499 (including GST).

Special Edition SE215 Purple Sound Isolating Earphones
The Shure Special Edition SE215 Purple is a trendy addition to a beloved classic.

Special Edition SE215 Purple

Like the SE846, the Shure SE215 has a substantial history. It was released in Spring 2011, during NAMM 2011.

Its age doesn’t mean it’s outdated, though, with the SE215 still beloved for clarity and deep bass, and detachable cable feature. This special purple edition is also the result of a special vote across 60 countries, with the addition to the lineup providing music lovers and Shure fans more choice of personalisation and identity.

As for features:

  • The SE215’s signature audio clarity and rich, deep bass.
  • Sound isolation that blocks up to 37 dB of distracting din.
  • Comfortable, low-profile ergonomic design inspired by professional music monitors.
  • Detachable 3.5 mm cable. The cable can be replaced by Shure’s True Wireless Secure Fit Adapter (sold separately).
  • Clear calls and controls with integrated remote + mic, and seamless controls.
  • Fit kit with a variety of sleeves to help you achieve the perfect fit.
  • Two years warranty and a carrying case.
