Free Electone sheet music and registrations for SMT III Puzzle Boy.
As a gamer and wannabe musician, a catchy tune is something that’d make me instantly love a game. And devote hours to beating it.
In the case of Shin Megami Tensei I, I loved the plot and the mythological references too, of course. But what really affirmed my conviction that this was a game that I’d love for life was the music.
Yeah. It’s like, SMT BGMs were so different to my ears when I first heard them! So unlike the soundtracks for other video games I had back then. So matured …
The Kichijoji overworld theme, and the dungeon tracks for Shinjuku and Ginza, were particularly memorable. In the case of Kichijoji, the repetitive and emphatic bass, with slightly discordant chords, perfectly sets the ambience too. In many ways, didn’t it also established the foundation for “SMT” music till now?
As for Puzzle Boy, I think this was a really intelligent re-arrangement by Shoji Meguro. The chords were changed but a richer, darker flavour was achieved.
You know, like Castlevania’s Vampire Hunter and Bloody Tears, I really look forward to a new version of this tune with each new SMT title. I’m keeping fingers crossed that for the coming SMT V, there’d be yet another memorable redressing of this superb composition.
PS: I have to say this. I LOVED the tune but seriously hated the actual mini-game. If only I could strangle that twitching little **%&* who refused to give me the magatama till I beat the game!

Some parts of this are a little different from the original, no thanks to all sorts of … technical limitations with the Yamaha Electone Stagea.
In short, that signature bass motif was too complex (for me) to play on the pedalboard. I also couldn’t play the motif on the lower keyboard as I needed to hold the chords for the arpeggio. In the end, I concluded it just had to be played on the upper keyboard.
I’ve never notated 8vb and loco in any arrangement so I’m not completely sure whether I did it right. What I mean is for the whole of Sections A and B to be played one octave lower on the upper keyboard.
The arpeggio is from one of the Pop rhythm presets. (One of the 8 beats). Now, it sounds like a simple 8th note thingy. However, if you don’t play the chord slightly before the first beat i.e. in a tenuto kind of way, the arpeggio comes out wrong. Please take note if you’re downloading my score.
That preset arpeggio is also the reason for (1). I just couldn’t get it to play any other way no matter how I invert the chords! I was also limited to certain simple chords structures in order for the arpeggio to sound harmonic.
Section D … Ahem. Because I couldn’t manage the bass motif with both feet, I decided to simplify it. In compensation, I mixed in one of the underworld themes from SMT II. (The one that plays around the time you encounter Janus, if I remember correctly) Hey, I think the end effect sounds quite fine!
Were I to grade this, I’d say it’s a Grade 7. It’s simple enough for most parts but with choice exercises for the right hand and feet. Very good drill for mid-level Electone students, in other words. 🙂
Oh, there’s a brief cameo by Pascal. Woof! The only family dog you’d ever need, when you’re not grinding Puzzle Boy!
