Two visits to the visually magnificent Atlas Bar.
When I started this Geeky Restaurant series, Atlas Bar at Parkview Square was one of the first names that came to my mind.
You can easily guess why, yes? Within or outside the country, Atlus Bar is celebrated as one of the grandest dining establishments in Singapore. The bar, and the surrounding lobby, are also the foremost places in Singapore to enjoy 1920s Art Deco opulence.
Art Deco opulence, as in the art style forever associated with Jazz, New York, and the award-winning game series Bioshock. Hey, those of you who are gamers, remember the name of one of the main characters in the first game?
Yeah, I thought Atlas Bar would be the perfect geeky join to review.
But me being me, I never went. That is, not till last month. So as to properly enjoy the different menus and ambience, I made two visits, one at tea time and another during the evening. In summary, I would say:
- You really have to experience it to believe it. Entering the lobby is akin to stepping into another world, a golden one that dazzles and awes. Also, one that immediately reminded me of Jazz Age movies, the Great Gatsby, and video games.
- The vicinity delighted the lifelong gamer in me. Apart from the mythology-inspired murals, Parkview Square is surrounded by various avant-garde sculptures. These would all feel very at home in a Shin Megami Tensei or Persona game.
- The service at Atlas Bar was superb! Attentive but never intrusive, with the staff always going the extra step to be engaging. During both visits, I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartenders. These brief conversations certainly invoked many classic movie moments.
Parkview Square: Statues and Murals
Like I mentioned above, Parkview Square itself delights with its elaborate Gothic architecture and fittings.
