Little India Deepavali Light-Up 2019

Dazzling peacocks and a spectacular tunnel of lights at Little India Deepavali Light-Up 2019.

Two things about this year’s Little India Deepavali Light-Up.

  1. Goodness, I didn’t know the celebration for this year’s Festival of Lights started on Sep 8! I was so caught up with other things, I completely missed news coverage of the opening ceremony.
  2. It looks and feels grander than ever! I can’t be completely sure about this, as I can’t find any written information online, but the lights seem to extend further up Serangoon Road this time. Viewed at the right spot, i.e., in the middle of a crossing, it’s like an ethereal tunnel of lights that goes on forever.

The Welcome Mascots

The stately “welcome mascots” at the junction of Serangoon Road and Bukit Timah Road have been changed. They are still peacocks, but they now come with animated feathers and quite the princely stare.

Aren’t these new Little India peacocks lovely?

Serangoon Road Light-Up 2019

Little India Light-Up 2019.
Festive archway beside Tekka Market. Like previous years, this is incredibly elaborate and a joy to look at when illuminated.

The above-mentioned tunnel of lights at Serangoon Road. The geometric beauty is absolutely mesmerising.
Indian Chariot at Little India Deepavali Celebrations.
Illuminated chariot after Race Course Lane. According to news write-ups, the President “rode” on this during the opening ceremony. Sadly, though, this beautiful set-piece is somewhat let down by the excavation works surrounding it. (Which I’ve cropped from the pic)
Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple Gopuram
The illuminated Gopuram of Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. This isn’t part of the festive light-up, but it adds to the ethnic festive feel of the district?

Deepavali 2019 Festive Village at Campbell Lane

Campbell Lane Deepavali Festive Village 2019.
While Serangoon Road is a tunnel of lights, the festive village at Campbell Lane is a canopy of garlands!
Little India Deepavali Bazaar 2019
More garlands! The air of the bazaar was thick with the scent of Jasmines and Roses.

A lovely carving of the Goddess Lakshimi (I think) on a chest for sale.
