Pokémon Detective Pikachu Synopsis
Tim Goodman travels to Ryme City after receiving news that his estranged father, Harry, died in a car accident. While searching Harry’s apartment, Tim encounters a Pikachu i.e. Harry’s Pokémon partner, whom Tim is inexplicably able to talk with and understand. Together, they investigate Harry’s death and discover that before his demise, the detective was investigating a mysterious gas that drives Pokémons berserk. Their diggings soon also expose a larger conspiracy. One that involves every single human and Pokémon inhabitant of Ryme City.
Snappy Review
Yes! People went “Awwwww!!!” several times during the movie, the loudest being that magical moment when Pikachu first appears. Considering that trailers had been circulating for months, don’t you agree this is testimony to the enduring popularity of the Pokémon franchise, as well as the unbelievable, irresistible kawai-ness of the world’s favourite electric rodent?
Yeah, pika pika. It’s all about the cuteness of Pikachu. Presented via a plot that wouldn’t impress, but wouldn’t bore either.
To put it in another way, the whole of Pokémon Detective Pikachu is sheer fan service. For yesterday’s 90s kids, for today’s rugrats, for Pokémon Go players … The more unforgiving might slam this as blatant commercialism but personally, I felt the effects and acting were more than reasonable. The little darlings were really that adorable.
As for the story, it’s nothing too memorable, although credit must be given to the writers’ efforts in translating a video game plot into something that’s appealing on the large screen. I also believe I still would have enjoyed the movie even if I had never played any video games before.
And oh, Reynold’s wisecracking and sardonic Pikachu has a certain adult appeal as well. (No! Not in that way) For starters, he makes you wonder just what the Anime Pokémons were thinking throughout Ash Ketchum’s many absurd capers.
This delicious question is surely one that will give fans comical dreams for many nights.
