Chinatown Chinese New Year Light-Up 2019

Checking out the much debated piggies, and more, at Chinatown Chinese New Year Light-Up 2019.

I’ll admit I haven’t been looking forward to this year’s Chinatown Chinese New Year Light-Up. The Year of the Pig has always suffered various degrees of abusive humour in Singapore. With regard to this year’s display at niu che shui, the main scorn, or should I say complaint, is also that the main showpiece looks too piggy-like.

Yeah, too piggy-like. As in too realistic. Too swine-like. Bovine. Instead of a cute representation.

And so while I was eager to know how the main display looks and feels like when seen in person, it took quite a bit of effort on my part to actually make the trip.

Well, the good news is, the “stack” of pigs is actually quite decent when illuminated; the fats and eye bags are somewhat obscured. (It’s like having BB cream applied!)

It’s certainly nowhere near gorgeous but if the design objective is to, err, project abundance or excess, I guess the derided pigs do paint the picture.

Hmm … !

Elsewhere, the streets of Chinatown are their usual CNY festive self. Some of the festive stalls, such as the Chinese sausage ones, are even at the same spots as last year.

As for the crowds, the festive bazaar was packed when I visited, although the main light-up stretch along Eu Tong Sen Street was still manageable. Naturally, this is only going to change as we draw nearer to the Year of the Pig.

Oink!

Chinatown Chinese New Year Lights 2019

The much-debated Chinatown Light-Up piggies! Don’t look too bad, do they? After they are illuminated.
Another view. Eye mascara is a tad too heavy, if you ask me. But hey, maybe that’s the look for the Year of the Pig 2019.
From above! Now the eyes look about right!
The entourage of other wealth-bringing piglets behind the main ones.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Festive Bazaar 2019

The usual sea of red at this year’s Chinatown Chinese New Year festive bazaar.
There were many melon seeds, nuts, and Taiwanese fruit jellies stalls! All sorts of exotic flavours on sale too.
My favourite Chinatown CNY festive stall i.e. the Chinese sausage (lup cheong) outlet. I take a picture of this stall each year.
Naturally, adorable Oink Oinks were sold everywhere. (I think the golden one would make for a great CNY business gift)
Overview of the Smith Street junction.
At the Buddha Tooth Temple. Nice gateway perfect for selfies.
A sea of lanterns at South Bridge Road. This seems a reversion to traditional appeal, after the more modern decorations of recent years. But I kinda prefer it over coins, dolls, etc.

Chinatown Chinese New Year Light-Up 2019 is ongoing till March 6, 2019. The festive bazaar ends on Feb 4, 2019.
