Outside of the festive rendition of Whoville and Cumberbatch’s superior voiceover, there’s little that’s funny about The Grinch (2018).

The Grinch (2018) Synopsis

After enduring the raucous Christmas joy of Whoville for 53 years, the misanthropic Grinch decides to put an end to his suffering once and for all by thoroughly ruining Christmas. For that purpose, he concocts a wicked scheme involving a muscled reindeer, many contraptions, and his faithful canine companion, Max. If successful, no Who will ever have a reason to celebrate Christmas again. The Grinch will forever ruin the joyous holiday.

Snappy Review

I didn’t enjoy the Grinch (2018). I was bored before the first half-hour was over.

Correspondingly, I fail to understand the ratings the movie is getting on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, I know this declaration sounds very Grinch-like in itself, but hear me out. I didn’t find the movie funny because the trailers gave away the funniest bits, on top of setting the dominant comedic frame for the entire show. In other words, there were no surprises for me, no variation in gags.

Admittedly, there was still a certain malevolent joy when The Grinch finally got down to, you know, doing that. A wicked glee mostly brought on by the outrageous contraptions he used.

Unfortunately, it was also crystal clear by then that the story is not going to vary from Dr. Seuss’ original; you know exactly how the caper was going to turn out. While one could argue this constitutes respect for the source material, I think classic Christmas redemption stories have long been done to death. (Check the number of those on Netflix and Hallmark) Might be expecting too much here, but I was keeping fingers crossed for something a little … different? That something, sadly, didn’t remotely happen.
