Snappy Movie Review | Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Synopsis

Slacker and bassist Scott Pilgrim leads an insipid life till meeting Ramona Flowers, a girl literally from his dreams. He is then attacked by the fire-throwing Matthew Patel, after which Scott discovers to his horror he is now the target of all of Ramona’s ex-boyfriends. To survive these evil exes, Scott needs to utilise every trick and combat skill he has, down to his nifty, oh-so-cool bass guitar licks.

Snappy Review

There were various reasons as to why I gave Scott Pilgrim vs. the World a miss when it came out in 2010. Rather unfavourable blog reviews was one. The other reason involved the Japanese Manga and Anime live-action adaptations I watched during that period.

To say that those adaptations were, ahem, cringe-worthy, is to put it politely. Actually, I could barely sit through most of them. I was thus convinced that adopting Anime style in live-action movies was a sure formula for disaster. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, western production or not, would be no exception.

Well, I finally watched it, via Netflix, and what I can say is, such adaptations could charm given the right production team and budget, though I wouldn’t exactly be looking forward to them from now on.

Slick and stylish as this movie might be, particularly the kick-ass combat scenes, it’s still downright bizarre. The story, which would feel so right at home in a Manga, was nothing short of baffling too. In several incidences, events depicted even bordered on the absurd.

Worse, pervasive questions such as “just what sort of world this is” and “how the F did Scott get his powers?” never received any explanation. Beyond a point, I’d even say the lack of answers forced me to shut off.

When the latter happened, all that sustained my interest were the noisy fight sequences. These undeniably still entertained. Some, such as the sonic battle, were also inventive

However, the entire viewing experience then became akin to watching someone’s YouTube Let’s Play video. It’s entertaining. It’s occasioning thrilling too. But fan-creating experience, I’m sorry to say it was not. It certainly also tires quickly and made me wish for the movie to end ASAP.
