The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a perfect example of how A-list names and CGI effects wouldn’t compensate for bad acting and terrible story.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War Synopsis
Heartbroken after the death of her child, Freya, younger sister of evil sorceress Ravenna, retreats to the frigid north, where she raises an army of Huntsman to conquer the northern lands. When two of her best huntsmen secretly fall in love, she uses her icy powers to do whatever she could to force the two lovers apart.
Snappy Review
I went into The Huntsman: Winter’s War knowing it was going to be bad. But I thought, oh well, there’s still Ravenna with all her shadowy magic.
Everything else about the first movie aside, Charlize Theron did deliver a spirited performance back then, yes? Things can’t go that wrong with her in this sequel.
Wrong. Ravenna is back. She’s as delicious as ever too. Problem though, she’s reduced to a supporting character that appears in but a quarter of the show. The rest of the movie is instead stuffed full of mind-numbingly boring scenes, most of which containing banter so cold the Ice Queen herself would freeze over.
This, on top of there never being any clear indication of the Ice Queen’s objective. So she’s heartbroken. She’s moody too. Why then did she embark on a conquest of all the northern lands? Why did she also crave her sister’s beauty advisor?
You would think a heartbroken woman would, you know, prefer to be alone.
In short, The Huntsman: Winter’s War looks and feels like a blatant rip-off of Frozen. A movie you should just watch for glittery special effects, and nothing else.
The other way of putting it is, snippets of the magical fights on platforms like YouTube would entertain you more than the movie itself. Way, WAY more.
